Please empower the girl/woman. She is intelligent, knowledgeable, thinker, writer and everything connected with the brain. Don't judge her only by her looks, her appearance and don't be afraid by her sharp thinking. She is just like you.....only a little more gentle, more emotional, more sensitive. Just like you, she may be black, fat, a little different.....so are you. The more you appreciate her, the more she will be secure and the more she will be secure, the more secured will the society, in general. After all, who gives birth to the society?

JAGJIT SINGH.....THE END OF AN ERA

MY BRUSH WITH THE CELEBRITY
A window into the personality of Jagjit Singh

I thank God for giving me the opportunity of knowing Jagjit Sing, the famous gazal singer, albeit for a very short period. In those two meetings with the maestro, I got  the opportunity to know him from close qaurters and recognize the simplicity and  genius of the man. A truly gifted artist , no doubt, but a much much better human being , I could see. Not to forget the razor sharp mind! His concerts were so lively, filled with jokes, lightening the heaviness in the atmosphere. He could literally make the audience dance according to his tunes and his velvety voice would simply float out into the night like beautiful waves of gentle fragrance, caressing your ears and intoxicating your mind and capturing your heart!!

This is what the media had to say about him :

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/8820731/Jagjit-Singh.html

I remember this gazal today, with a heavy heart and wet eyes..........

sadma hai mujhe bhi ke tuJhse juda hoon main
lekin ye sonchtaa hoon ke ab tera kyaa hoon main

biKhraa pada hai tere hi ghar mein tera wajood
bekaar meHfilon mein tuJhe dhoondtaa hoon main

naa jaane kis adaa se liya toone mera naam
duniya samaJh rahee hai ke sab kuCh tera hoon main

le mere tajurbon se sabak ae mere raqeeB
do chaar saal umR mein tuJhse bada hoon main

God Bless his soul......Rest in Peace,

Namaste.

FENG SHUI in everyday life

You need not know feng-shui to get the benefits of it in your life. Just remember some simple and easy to follow points and start receiving the good energies in your house and in turn, your life.

 What does feng-shui mean?

Feng-shui literally means wind-water. When these elements are in harmony, it gives the benefits of harmonious and happier living condition in life. The smooth flow of energy in our house ensures healthy and happy vibrations in our home and life.

What can a layman do to ensure good feng-shui in the house?

Any person can follow a simple but common thumb-rule to get good results of feng-shui. Simply concentrate on removing the negative energies from the house or the office because bad feng-shui also enters the house unknowingly due to some small and seemingly insignificant factors.
I am giving a broad outline about this by giving some examples of bad feng-shui entering or affecting the house.

  • Make sure that the main entrance is not hindered by a pole or a wall.
  • Donot place a mirror in front of the main entrance nor the door of the bathroom should face the main door.
  • A revolving staircase in the house gives a bad effect.
  • Donot keep the doors of the toilets and also the toilet seats open.
  • Donot keep knives and scissors in the open.
  • Dispose broken mirrors, stopped clocks and non-working items.
  • Take care that leakage of water tanks and water taps are avoided.
Over and above these point, the simplest way to get rid of the negativity is to "clear the clutter, or de-cluttter".

What does "clutter" mean?

Any thing you don't need is considered a clutter. Like piling of old magazines you have not read since the past one year, or the pile of papers besides the bed or a mound of clothes which are useless...all these things create physical clutter and  things on mental or energetic level is called space clutter, for eg: unfinished projects.Do not overload the house with too much of antic pieces or memorabilia...it clutters the good energy from flowing freely into the house.

What are its effects?

Too much clutter can drain the energy and bring depression along with fatigue. Open spaces open up the mind and lightens the body. It can affect the decision taking ability. Low 'chi' often brings a financial crisis in the business.

How to 'de-clutter'?

You can start out with  disposing off the old memorabilia like old letters, drawings, photos and definitely all the negatives of the photos. You can start out with your bedroom by keeping 3 boxes marked, 'things to keep', 'trash' and 'things to be disposed or given to the charity'.

Once the 'de-cluttering' is done, then your job is done, though it is an ongoing process. You have now created an environment wherein you are inviting the positive 'chi' energy to grace your house, and your life!!

Eckhart Tolle ◦ The Simple Truth

Eckhart Tolle....The author of the book, "The power of Now" is being interviewed. He was one of the many people who influenced my thinking towards the so-called 'no-thinking'!!!
Ironically, I read this book immediately after reading the book, 'The Art of Dreaming', by Carlos Castanada, and I felt that I was pulled in all spiritual directions at the same time!!The experience was, hair-raising, to say the least!! When I came across this particular video, it answered a lot of my questions that were raised in my mind at that time, and were unanswered.
I wish you all the same experience...listen to him and get some answers!!!

Manzile Udaan.....

When I heard about the High Court Bomb Blast, my mind started whirling and I was gripped by various emotions like anger, grief, hurt, love for my nation, humanity, thoughts of Anna Hazare and his fasting, the ruthless politicians, terrorists, poverty.........Here is what I think about the whole situation.

Let us join our hands and pray for the well being of all!!!!!!

God Bless, Ami.

My experience with Switch Words

Sometimes, some things happen in your life that force you to believe in miracles.

Switch words came into my life like miracles, showing me miracles.

What are switch words?
A gentleman named James Mangan wrote a book called, “The Secret of Perfect Living” wherein he gave a list of about 100 words which worked miracles in the day-to-day life and named them "switchwords" since they worked like switches--shedding light on the problem area and solving them effectively.
Switch words are single affirmative words that works directly with the subconsciousness mind, bypassing the rational or the logical mind and giving the desired results. Repeating switch words for a particular task or goal gives fast results.

Out of the 100 such switchwords, one very popular switchword is, "REACH"--this switchword is used to find lost or misplaced items, or recall names or numbers or some forgotten information.

My experience with the switchword "REACH"

Being a Hindu, I usually wear gold ornaments during festivals. After one such occasion, I misplaced my gold earrings and panicked! I searched everywhere, but could not find them. I racked my brains, but drew a blank! After extensively searching them everywhere, I suddenly remembered about having read about switchwords and how they help in finding things. It was the last attempt. I searched the net and found that the switchword for finding lost items was, "REACH" I felt really ridiculous chanting it, but wanted to try anything that would get me my lost errings! I started chanting "REACH" repeatedly in my mind without much conviction. For one whole day, I repeated the word and waited for some sort of miracle, but nothing happened! That night, I went to bed with a heavy heart and laughed at myself for believing in silly things. Next day, I repeated the switchword unknowingly and went about my daily routine. To take away my mind from worries, I decided to clean my dressing table and started emptying the drawers. In one such drawer full of all makeup tubes and pencils, I saw a tiny plastic lock bag, which looked familiar, and Lo! and Behold! inside were my precious gold earrings!! I could not believe my luck and at the same time I realized that I was still chanting "REACH" in my mind! I laughed out and hugged myself with joy. I very sincerely thanked the switch word for helping me and also apologized for not having faith. Frankly, to this day, I have no idea how those earrings appeared inside the makeup drawer of the dressing table!!

After this incident, I took a printout of all the switchwords and now use them according to my needs, successfully.

"COUNT" is a switch word for money and "HOLE" is a switch word for attraction--want to try them?

Love,
"BE-TOGETHER-WITH-DIVINE ORDER"(A positive switch word string for wellness)
Ami.

Osho Quotes on Freedom...........by Sujit Bannerjee

"Freedom" means freedom from the mind. Then you are simply in a silence, and in that silence you melt, you merge with the whole. And to melt and merge with the whole is to be holy. Not by fasting, not by torturing, but by becoming one with the whole, one becomes holy.

Your freedom is a supreme value. Nothing is higher than that. But your freedom is possible only if you are not encaged in your habits, unconscious patterns of living. Change your gestalt from unconsciousness to consciousness.

Never follow anybody else's idea -- that is very dangerous because you will become imitative. Always follow your own nature, self-nature; only then will you attain to freedom. It is better to die following one's nature than to live following somebody's else's nature, because that will be a pseudo life. To die following one's nature is beautiful, because that death too will be authentic.

When sex becomes conscious it is love, it is no longer lust. Love brings freedom, and lust simply creates prisons for you.

Create inner freedom through witnessing. Sannyas is only for the inner freedom. And live out of inner freedom.

There is no other revolution except consciousness. It cuts the desires from the very roots and it brings freedom to you.

The most fundamental message of Gautama the Buddha is not God, is not soul... it is freedom: freedom absolute, total, unconditional. He does not want to give you an ideology, because every ideology creates its own slavery.

Desire is our imprisonment. The man who wants nothing, who is absolutely contented as he is, is free of all bondage. He has attained to ultimate freedom, nirvana -- and that is the goal of life. And it is only by attaining that freedom that you will know the significance of being, the song of being, the celebration of being. Your life will become a continuous bliss, and not only that YOU will be blissful, you will be able to bless others too. The whole existence will be blessed by you, by your very presence.

Buddha says: Meditation brings two things. It brings wisdom, it brings freedom. These two flowers grow out of meditation. When you become silent, utterly silent, beyond the mind, two flowers bloom in you. One is of wisdom: you know what is and what is not. And the other is of freedom: you know now there are no more any limitations on you, either of time or of space. You become liberated. Meditation is the key to liberation, to freedom, to wisdom.

Become aware, awake. Then you will see that everything comes and goes, all things come and pass. Life is a flux. Your consciousness is the only thing that is immovable, that is eternal. To attain it is freedom. To attain it is the goal of life. If you miss it you have missed your life and you have missed a tremendously great gift, a great opportunity.

All meditations are nothing but efforts to bring you to the present. When you live in the present moment, with no past hanging around you, with no future projection, you are free from life and death, you are free from body and mind. You are free -- simply free -- you are freedom.

Buddha says the greatest joy in life is freedom: freedom from all prejudices, freedom from all scriptures, freedom from all concepts and ideologies, freedom from all desires, freedom from all possessiveness and jealousy, freedom from all hatred, anger, rage, lust... in short, freedom from everything, so that you are just a pure consciousness, unbounded, unlimited. That is the greatest joy, and it is possible -- it is within everybody's grasp. You just have to grope for it a little. The groping will be in the dark, but it is not far away. If you try, if you make an effort, you are bound to find it. It is your birthright.

Beware of dreams! And watch your dreams day in, day out, because they are continuously there. You can watch them, and by watching them you will become unidentified with them, you will become a mirror reflecting them. And this brings great freedom. Freedom from dreams is freedom from the world.

Remember, until you become a buddha you have wasted your life. Buddhahood is your flowering, your fragrance. A tree is fulfilled when it blooms, and a man is fulfilled when he releases the fragrance of buddhahood, when he becomes luminous; then he comes to know who he is. In knowing that, all is known. In knowing that, God is known. In knowing that, truth is achieved -- you become the truth, and truth liberates. Truth is freedom.

The man who is asleep reacts; he knows nothing of action. And reaction is a binding: it binds you into new prisons, new chains. Response is out of freedom, hence it brings more freedom. Reaction is out of the past; you act according to your memories, built-in by your experiences, conditionings. You react not to the present, not in the present. You don't reflect the real situation as it is; you go on interpreting it according to your past, your past experiences. The man who is awake is like a mirror: he reflects that which is the case. HE IS AWAKE.

Hell means nothing but misery; it is a psychological state of misery, a state of negativity, a state of darkness, of utter loneliness. And heaven is joy, happiness, health, light. But there is a third word, moksha. Moksha means freedom, freedom from both heaven and hell, freedom from pain and pleasure -- because pain binds you as much as pleasure binds you. Pain may be an ugly chain and pleasure may be a beautiful chain, decorated, maybe made of gold, but it chains you. Hell may be a poor place and heaven may be a very rich place but poverty and riches are two aspects of the same coin. One has to be free of both.

Happy Independence Day India :-)

Spirituality and Gandhi.........to Anna Hazare-A full circle!!

It is a well known fact that Mahatma Gandhi resorted to Rama Naam Japa before tackling an issue. Whenever he was backed up into a corner, or was faced with a difficult situation, he would retreat to his Ashram's riverside and meditate on the flowing river Sabarmati. Maa sabarmati has found solutions for him by being present with him in his inner turmoil. She has been the silent witness to this great thinker's dilemmas. With her presence in Spirit and Rama naam, he has come upon revolutionary and unique solutions to complex and almost impossible problems.

Any struggle for truth cannot be overcome without a solid backbone of spirituality to lend it an authentic voice to it.Any great leader of his time, has invariably taken the inner support of spirituality in his own way. It is the true pathfinder and the force behind any revolution for the TRUTH. Sri sri Maa Anandmayi once gave a scintillating guidance to Mrs. Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister, India, " Be with the TRUTH. Let it be your true guide."

Anna Hazare has said, "The time for second freedom struggle has begun...Time has come, my countrymen, when there should be no place left in jails in India" Is this enough to shake us out of our complacency?

May all my countrymen awaken to their true Budhha nature, and be the Light Beings of Mother Bharati!!!!

God Bless, NAMASTE!!!!!!

YOGA AND ME

How will you get started?

To begin with, relax and make yourself comfortable.

There are several parameters you should keep in mind before you start practicing yoga to obtain optimum results.

Time: The ideal time for practicing yoga is early in the morning. It is preferred to keep the stomach empty. In fact, you are advised to keep a gap of about two hours before having breakfast or meals and after Yoga.
A maximum time period of 30 min. should be enough in the beginning for the complete session of yoga. Later on you can add another 15 min. for techniques like pranayama and end it with meditation to completely calm the mind and spirit.

Place: Selection of place is a very crucial factor in starting your yoga practice. Yoga is not merely a set of exercises. Rather it is a practice wherein all our endocrine glands are stimulated, thus calming our mind. Therefore a quite and airy place is preferred or else an open place like a garden with lots of fresh air is quite helpful.

Clothes: Try to wear clothes that will not hamper your movements and are not too tight or binding. This will aid you in learning and concentrating on your asana.
Over and above these, there are things like how much time you can devote to a particular asana, when to inhale and exhale, and synchronization of the asanas, that is, which asanas should be performed back to back in a sequence. All the above parameters vary accordingly, corresponding to various asanas.

Some Important Points to remember gefore starting a Yoga Session :
  • Yoga should be under the guidance of a Teacher
  • A warmup should be helpful before starting it.
  • Chanting a Mantra before and after the session is beneficial.

I am giving you the method of some of the basic asanas a beginner can start with, for your perusal:

Learn and Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Prasritta Padottanasana: ( Wide Stance Forward Fold)

Take a standing position on your mat. Keep your feet wide apart and put your hands on your hips. Inhale deeply and stretch yourself up. Exhale and bend down from your hips and look behind. Put both your hands on the floor between your legs with your elbows pointing behind you. This is the simple Wide Stance Forward Fold Pose – Prasrita Padottanasana.

 Rotated version
Now put your right hand on your right hip. Exhale and stretch it up towards the ceiling. Take care that there is no bend in the arm from the elbow and the fingers are pointing straight towards the ceiling. Turn your head to look up at the fingers of your raised arm. Slowly bring your hand to the original position on the floor and repeat the same pose for the left side for an equal amount of time.

 Common for both
After doing the pose on the left side, slowly unwind and return both the hands once again to the floor and slowly straighten up to your original standing position.

Utthita Parsakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose)

Stand with your feet 2 – 3 feet apart and exhale. Lift your arms so that they are parallel to the ground. Turn your left foot slightly towards the right side and twist your right foot at an angle of 90 degrees. Inhale and extend your left hand above your head in such a way that it touched your left ear and the palm faces the ground. Got it? Now make sure that both the hand and the leg are combined and appear as a tight slanting line. Turn your head to look at your left hand. Maintain this stance for a few seconds. Now bend your right knee in such a way that the leg from the knee down is perpendicular to the floor, whereas the thigh is parallel to it. Take care to align your knee with the centre of your foot. Along with bending the leg, touch your right hand to your right ankle in such a way that it touches the outer side of your knee. Stay in this pose for approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stretch as much as possible and then return to the standing position and relax. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for the left side also and complete the asana.

 Malasana (Garland Pose)

Take a standing position with your feet wide apart and your hands by your sides. Now exhale and squat down on the ground and open out your thighs.. See that they are spread wide beyond your feet. If your heals lift up in the beginning, then put a folded towel to support them and help press down. To facilitate even further, the toes can be rotated by 45 degrees outside so that your hips can come even closer to the ground. Now move your body foreword so that it fits between both your knees. Now move your hands in a loop joining the palms into a ‘namaskar’ or salutation. Press your inner thighs to your torso and lenghthen your spine. Hold onto this position for 30 sec. to 1 min. But, take care not to overdo it. Inhale and return your knees to normal position and then slowly come to your original standing position.

Twist, Turn and Squat to Detox, Relax and Release!!

Practicing yoga ultimately leads you to do long phases of meditation. The Garland Pose-Malasana is one such hip opening asana which prepares you to be seated in a meditation pose for a long time without getting aches and pain. Release tension and garland your life with peace and joy!!

Yoga and My Guru.... Swami Sri Manuvaryaji _/\_

I am from the old school which preaches, “Prevention is better than cure”.

Today’s mechanization gives us no chance for exertion. However, I am most thankful to my Father, who introduced me to this wonderful art of Yoga, at a very young age of 12. He used to take me along with him to “Yogashram”-an institution of Yoga run by a renowned Yogi of his time –  Swami Sri Manuvaryaji, in Ahmedabad (Gujarat, India).

Guruji was invited to New Delhi by our former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi to take the place of her Yoga Guru, and ran the Yoga Centers there, quite efficiently, for a couple of years.

At the time, I think he must be over 70 years of age, but the light on his face was amazing! Since, he was a “Brahmachari” – A yogi observing Celibacy for the lifetime, he did not prefer to teach Yoga directly to older women himself.  He, therefore, would teach me the “Asanas” (yogic poses), and I would then teach those to the ladies wing. It was indeed a blessing in disguise for me!!

He was also invited to give programmes in the national TV many times, and almost always took me as a volunteer to demonstrate the various asanas.

Later on, after many years, I opened a Gym for the ladies, wherein, I taught Yoga for free, since Guruji disliked charging for it and expected us, his disciples, to follow his principles. Whenever someone would enquire about his fees, he would exclaim cheerfully, " Mafee !!"--meaning "sorry" in gujarati language.

Swamiji is no more, but his Ashram is there for us to take inspiration, and his presence is felt by us, even today.

Blessed Be,
                    Namaste,
                                        Ami.

REUSE AND RECYCLE TIPS-Lets adorn mother earth with a green shawl!!

There was a Buddhist monk whose dress tore and the Buddha asked what did you do with it, and he said I made a sheet to cover myself in the cold, and when that tore, the Buddha asked again and he said, I stiched into a door mat to absorb wetness and again when that too tore, he said I used it as a mop to wipe the temple floor clean and when that too disintegrated into shreds, the Buddha asked, "What did you do with that?" and the monk said, "That is the wick that lights the lamp now at your altar Oh Enlightened One!"
--Taken from a post from Swahilya Shambhavi.

Don't throw away CDs.

  • Use them as coasters.
  • Put them under your pots to protect your floor from getting marked.
  • Use them as mirror for plugging into device backed up against a wall, a computer etc.
  • Punch a hole on the top of all of them and string them together to make a photo album.
  • Write with a marker pen on the mirrored side, the information required, and use them as labels.
  • string them together and make a lovely and unique curtain.
  • Stick it under a paper plate to make it stiff while eating, and then retain it while disposing the plate.
  • Use it as a candle stand .
  • Cut it into different shapes and use them for decorating.

Thought of the Day.....

To overcome a judgmental tendency in yourself, observe others who are themselves afflicted with that tendency.
They judge because they are distrustful of others as well as of themselves. And what they distrust most of all is Originality.
Their first question in any situation is, "What is proper? What is done?"
Their vision is narrow because the route they travel is a rut.

Gratitude....As a Daily Prayer.

Prayers are the best method to combat problems. They are a direct dialogue between a Higher presence and us. However, many a times, either we do not know what to say or how to say them.

I found out a very effective method of praying - just being thankful about anything and everything!

I simply start out with common things like being thankful for giving me such a beautiful childhood, a healthy body, understanding parents, supporting friends, a forgiving partner, so on and so forth. And as I get into the mood, then as the list of thanksgiving goes on increasing, a great wave of gratitude washes over me and peace prevails in my heart.

After this wonderful experience, I started keeping a list of things and events and people with me, to give my thanks.

The one great advantage of giving gratitude is that it diverts our mind from its woeful tale of how everything is not working out for us, and turns it around to give a positive light to what all we are lucky enough to have with us!!

Another quite effective method , is to keep a journal or maintain a gratitude diary.

Thank you All.....God Bless,
                                              Ami.

GURUPOORNIMA.........Benevolent Bonding On A Full Moon

GURUPOORNIMA...A Full Moon Day with a Difference....

In almost all religions, full moon has its own meaning and importance. In Wicca too, it has a special significance.

Right from my early childhood, I have had a curious fascination for it. It was only after I grew up and studied astrology, did I get the connection. I am born on a Full Moon Day myself, and therefore more intuitive and moody then others. But otherwise also, just as the oceans go mad on these days, so do humans, to a certain extent, since even our body contains 80% water. Our body is magnetised and our mind tuned to the finer channel than the mundane. Especially, the full moon of gurupoornima...it fine tunes our mind and psyche toward the spiritual messages directed to us by the Masters. A special magnetic bonding between the Master and the Disciple takes place on this auspicious day.

In Sai Satcharitra, Sri Baba tells us the importance of a Guru, or a teacher by giving an example of taking a guide with us when going to an unknown place so that we may not be lost. In the same way, when we embark upon the unknown journey of Life, a proper Guide is need to show us the right path. Who better than our Reverend Guru to show us the path of enlightenment? Saint Kabir said that if both the Guru and God appeared before him, he would first bow to his Guru, because without his guidance, how on the earth was he able to even take a glance at God?

Today..this Gurupoornima, has a special meaning to me, because on this day,  I started writing on my blog which was standing since many days waiting for me to do something! so here I am, or am I(the spelling of ami).....Ami :)

Being Spiritual

The other day I was surfing through the Internet and came across a blog which had put up a question-what does being spiritual mean?

I started writing my answer and immediately got caught up in different viewpoints myself. I took a sneak peak into some of the answers, and found that they varied from mundane to real eye-openers!

I think that we can compare the term to water. Just as it takes its shape according to the container, so does the term spiritual.....it takes its meaning according to the soul. Not only that, it changes its meaning as we move from one level of concienceness to another.

In Krishna concienceness, its the Bhaktiyog. The Shiva concienceness speaks of Adwaita - that is, coming to a single source from Duality. Whereas Christ concienceness is Healing. And attaining Buddhahood, is attaining Enlightenment. In a way, it is like asking the obvious - is there LIFE? GRAVITY? GOD?!!!

According to me, where the physical world ends, the world of spirits starts - hence the word, SPIRITUAL. It is the state of mind where logic dies before a state of infinite vastness. Very much similar to closing doors of a dark room and stepping out into a vast garden filled with sunlight!!

A state of infinite bliss, but contained within, what the Hindus call - a state of being STHITAPRAGYA.

Blessed Be and NAMASTE to ALL!!!!!!!!!
